Doloris C. Cogan Summer Theatre Series at the Lerner

coganThe Ernestine M. Raclin School of the Arts presents the second annual Doloris C. Cogan IU South Bend Summer Theatre Series.

This series will feature four fully staged theatre productions at the Lerner Theater in Elkhart running from June through August. The series opens with Pippin on June 13, continues in July with the children’s play The Wizard of Oz on July 11 immediately followed by the ballet Swan Lake on July 12. Smash will conclude the series on August 8.

The Doloris C. Cogan IU South Bend Summer Theatre Series began in 2012 with a gift from Ms. Cogan of Elkhart, which enables IU South Bend to bring three to five fully-staged productions to the Lerner Theater each summer for perpetuity.

“This is an opportunity to bring IU South Bend, the Lerner Theatre, and the people of Elkhart together to learn and enjoy the arts,” Cogan says.

The series will kick off with Pippin by Stephen Schwartz and Roger O. Hirson on Thursday, June 13 at 7:30 pm. Pippin captures the transition into adulthood, a universal point of indecision in our lives, with raw and honest intensity. Stephen Schwartz, composer and lyricist of the show, is a master in relaying universal themes through very pointed and concentrated works.

At 11 am on Thursday, July 11, bring the children out for The Wizard of Oz, based on the book by L. Frank Baum. Join Dorothy, Scarecrow, the Tin-Woodman, the Cowardly Lion, and Toto as they make their way down the yellow brick road in search of Oz, while celebrating 50 years of children’s theatre with the IU South Bend Theatre and Dance Company

Come back the following evening for a reprisal of Tchaikovsky’s ballet Swan Lake at 7:30 pm Friday, July 12. This production features the IU South Bend Dance Company performing to music by the IUSB Philharmonic.

The series concludes with the performance of Smash at 7:30 pm on Thursday, August 8. Laugh out loud with this clever comedy by Jeffrey Hatcher based on George Bernard Shaw’s novel The Unsocial Socialist. Smash centers on the exploits of Sidney Trefusis, a millionaire socialist who wants to overthrow the British government.

Tickets are available through the Lerner Theater Box Office at or 800.294.8223. Ticket prices are $54 for the series, or $8-$18 for individual performances.
