Student Spotlight Recital celebrates chancellor installation

sonyabakerJoin IU South Bend in celebrating the installation of Chancellor Terry Allison with a Student Spotlight Recital, featuring guest soprano Sonya Baker on Tuesday, October 8.

The concert will feature a selection of talented music students of the Ernestine M. Raclin School of the Arts at 7:30 p.m. in the Northside Hall Campus Auditorium. This concert is being presented in conjunction with the installation of Allison, which will take place the following day.

The Student Spotlight Recital will include string performances of Rebecca Clark’s Viola Sonata by Taisiya Sokolova (viola) and Ilia Ulianitsky (piano); the first movement of Brahms’ Sonata in E for Cello and Piano by Kendrick Allenson (cello) and Dimitri Zhgenti (piano); and the first movement of Brahms’ Piano Quartet in G with Helen Papas (violin), Julia Beebe (viola), Kendrick Allenson (cello), and Siwon Kim (piano).

Ketevan Kartvelishvili (piano) will perform Liszt’s Mephisto Valse No. 1, and soprano Tamra Garrett will sing “Piangero la sorte mia” from Handel’s Giulio Cesare.

Making a special appearance on behalf of Chancellor Allison, soprano Sonya Baker will perform selections by Gabriel Fauré, Giacomo Puccini, Ricky Ian Gordon, and Margaret Bends.

In 2004 Baker made her Carnegie Hall debut with renowned conductor Michael Tilson Thomas and appeared as soloist on the Yale Alumni Chorus tour to Moscow singing at the Kremlin. Baker has appeared as soloist in several choral masterpieces including Bach’s Magnificat, Poulenc’s Gloria, and Mendelssohn’s Elijah with Robert Shaw conducting.

She holds degrees from Yale, Indiana and Florida State Universities, and is currently professor of voice and assistant dean of the College of Humanities & Fine Arts at Murray State University.
