Undergraduate vocal student performs in New York, Singapore
Undergraduate vocal student Lawrence Mitchell-Matthews took part in two exciting performance opportunities this summer. In July he sang with the Chautauqua Symphony Orchestra in Chautauqua, New York. Two weeks later he went to Singapore to perform at the invitation of South Bend Symphony Orchestra Conductor Tsung Yeh.
In Chautauqua, New York, Mitchell-Matthews sang five African-American spirituals arranged by the school of the arts’ own dean, Marvin Curtis.
Mitchell-Matthews performed Wade in the Water, Balm in Gilead, Changed My Name, Give Me Jesus, and Ride on King Jesus.
Two weeks after his performance with the Chautaqua Symphony, he flew to Singapore where he performed a selection of composer George Gershwin’s works.
His performance included A Woman Is A Sometime Thing (Baritone and Choir), I Got Plenty O’ Nuttin’ (Baritone), Porgy, I’s Your Woman Now (Soprano and Baritone) and Oh Lawd, I’m On My Way (Soprano, Baritone and Choir) from the “Porgy and Bess Suite” by Robert Russell Bennett.
