Dean's Letter

dean marvin curtis

Well, we hope that spring has finally arrived. It is hard to tell these days at the Ernestine M. Raclin School of the Arts. While the weather has been most uncooperative, our students are filled with anticipation as we enter the final month of the academic year.

It is the season of final BFA shows, senior and graduate recitals, Speech Night, the annual musical, and finishing up final projects.

We look forward to Commencement when we will honor the largest number of graduates in the school of the arts history. Our students have been diligent about their studies and worked to achieve their goals. They are supported by hard working faculty and staff who devote their energy to prepare our students for the real world.

We are particularly proud of the number of students who have accepted full fellowships at prestigious graduate schools.

April is packed full of exhibitions, performances, and opportunities to get away from the winter blues. Our second annual Fine Arts Weekend, April 10-13, is a great opportunity for a “staycation.” We have hotel accommodations available at the Inn at St Mary’s and discounts at several downtown restaurants, so you can spend an art-filled weekend in South Bend.

On April 10, our final theatre production of the year, Kiss Me, Kate opens for the weekend in the Campus Auditorium. Walk across campus to enjoy the spring weather and two art exhibitions, a BFA Show in the Art Gallery and the John Adams High School Exhibition in the Administration Building.

On April 11 at 7 p.m. there will be a reception for incoming students and their families, followed by a performance of Kiss Me, Kate. The next day we are hosting a reception for our alumni at 4 p.m., followed by the Music Faculty Recital in the new Louise E. Addicott & Yatish J. Joshi Performance Hall. Later that evening, attend Kiss Me, Kate.

Tickets for all the Fine Arts Weekend events are available through the Box Office, 574-520-4203. Alumni wishing to participate in Saturday’s events should contact Moira Dyczko at mdyczko@iusb.edu to reserve a spot.

Please join us during April at one of the more than twenty events and performances that pack the calendar. Our students’ inspiring work will certainly shine this month as they aspire to meet their goals. We’ll see you at the show!
