Question: Do you think the United States government should significantly reduce aid to Israel?

IU South Bend’s debate team competes with other universities on policy issues like this one. The debate team, in its second year of competing, recently finished sixth overall in Parliamentary Debate and third in Junior Varsity Parliamentary Debate at the McKendree University tournament in Lebanon, Illinois. There were 54 Parliamentary teams at the tournament from 14 schools.

Also at the tournament, Peter Farkas and Josh Law placed ninth in the Junior Varsity Debate. Cory Gilmartin and Luis Hernandez placed eleventh, while the team of Zion Castor and Jacob Jones placed fourteenth. Luiz Hernandez placed sixth for Junior Varsity speaker, while Cory Gilmartin placed fifteenth.

The Debate team is looking for members to keep the team solid for the years to come. The debate team consists of six members. “We’d like to see new members,” says team President Cory Gilmartin.  He and team member Peter Farkas both believe the team would be stronger with more members to compete against the larger teams from big schools. Farkas says he “feels the pressure” when he is debating, but he enjoys the challenge and feels strongly about getting new members for the team to help defeat the larger schools.

Students do not have to be experienced debaters to join the IU South Bend team. New team members compete against other novice teams at debate meets.

“It would be great for the team if one of our new members competes at Novice Nationals this year,” says Gilmartin. The Novice Nationals is open to students in their first year of intercollegiate forensics competition.

The Debate team offers experience in front of audiences, becoming more of a polished speaker, and helps you develop creativity plus critical thinking skills. The team is open to any student on campus from any major. The team welcomes any new members at any skill level.  The tournaments take place on the weekends, so it will not interfere greatly with class schedules.
