Speech Night Tradition Continues at IU South Bend

Speech Night 2010Top public speaking students represent
their class at Speech Night each semester

The Public Speaking program at the Ernestine M. Raclin School of the Arts at Indiana University South Bend is preparing for their bi-annual presentation of Speech Night.  Speech Night is a long standing tradition at the university that includes three preliminary round events followed by Speech Night Finals.  All events take place in Northside’s Recital Hall and admission is free.

Speech Night, an end of the semester event showcasing the best of Public Speaking at IU South Bend, is a tradition begun in 1982.  Every semester one student is selected from each discussion section of S121, Public Speaking, to present his or her persuasive speech in a Preliminary Round.  Two students are chosen from each Preliminary Round to present their speeches at Speech Night Finals.  All students who participate in either a Preliminary Round, or Speech Night Finals, as a master of ceremonies, timekeeper, or usher are currently enrolled in an S121, Public Speaking class.  Public Speaking is a course dedicated to understanding the relationship between speaker and listener in creating communication.

Speech Preliminary Rounds take place at 4 pm on Monday, November 28; 2:30 pm on Tuesday, November 29; and 7 pm on Wednesday, November 30.

Speech Night Finals will be a special evening featuring the winning speakers from the preliminary rounds, guest speakers, as well as guest judges from the community.  Speech Night Finals will take place at 7 pm on Monday, December 5.

Admission to Speech Night, both preliminary and final rounds, is free, however tickets are required.  Tickets may be picked up from the Ernestine M. Raclin School of the Arts Box Office, 574.520.4203.
