INDIANA UNIVERSITY SOUTH BEND RECEIVES SCHOLARSHIP ENDOWMENT FROM COACHMEN INDUSTRIES
South Bend, Ind. – Coachmen Industries, Inc. recently donated $50,000 to establish the Coachmen Industries, Inc. Scholarship Fund, which will support undergraduate scholarships for students enrolled in the School of Business and Economics at Indiana University South Bend, according to IU South Bend Chancellor Una Mae Reck.
The Elkhart-based manufacturer of recreational vehicles and producer of systems-built homes endowed the Indiana University Foundation in July, and the first scholarship will be awarded for the fall semester. The name of the first recipient is expected to be announced soon. The scholarship will have an approximate value of $800 in its first year, and will grow to a yearly amount of $2,500.
“We’re very pleased about the support from Coachmen Industries. The company understands the mission of the university to educate, and to keep the best and brightest students here in the area. We can retain students by providing quality education and financial assistance,” Reck said. “More than two-thirds of IU South Bend’s graduates stay and contribute to the Michiana area. We know that the Coachmen scholarship winners will be leaders in the fields of business and economics.”
Scholarship applicants must be full-time IU South Bend students, they must demonstrate financial need under federal guidelines, and hold a minimum of a 2.5 grade point average (GPA). A 3.0 or above GPA will have preference, and consideration will be given to applicants who are employees or family members of employees of Coachmen Industries. At least one “Coachmen Industries, Inc., Scholar” will be named annually, with scholarship funds divided equally between the fall and spring semesters. Recipients can reapply each year for renewal.
“The Michiana area’s long history of success comes from knowledgeable, hard-working people who believe in continuous improvement of their skills, talents and capabilities. Coachmen Industries has a tremendous respect for higher education, and the opportunities it provides for personal and professional career enhancement and achievement. We also take great pride in seeing people realize their potential and accomplishing their life’s goals. A college education opens many doors of opportunity, so we encourage anyone who meets the qualifications to apply for this new scholarship,” said Claire C. Skinner, chairman, chief executive officer and president of Coachmen Industries.
Coachmen Industries, Inc., founded in 1964, is one of the nation’s leading manufacturers of recreational vehicles with well-known brand names including Coachmen, Georgie Boy, and Shasta.
