It is my honor to serve as the sixth chancellor of Indiana University South Bend. IU South Bend plays a vital role in educational and economic development for our region. We also take pride in our arts and civic engagement. As a regional campus of Indiana University, students graduate with an IU degree offered right where they live and work, in a small campus environment where they learn from distinguished professors, and all at an affordable price. And, there is no time like the present for us to fulfill our role as a community catalyst as we collectively grapple with the COVID-19 pandemic and systemic issues of racial inequities and injustices.
We are a campus committed to diversity, equity and inclusion and are proud to be designated as a minority-serving institution, with nearly 30% of our students coming from diverse ethnic and cultural backgrounds. As a student-centered campus, our mission is to empower students to reach their goals so they can advance their lives and the lives of those around them while also making valuable contributions to our community, local organizations and businesses in our region, state, nation and world.
We also provide financial, academic and other support programs to all of our students. We annually award over $43 million in scholarships, jobs on campus, work study programs, and other forms of financial aid to help students earn their degree with little or no debt. Students receive advising and mentoring support from our dedicated faculty and staff, and from peer tutors in our Academic Centers for Excellence. We have a variety of additional support services, from our Office of Veteran Student Services, Student Counseling Center and Disability Support Services, to our Career Services Office that offers help with career exploration and job preparation. Our graduates are sought-after by employers in the region and have gone on to great professional and personal success!
We have a beautiful campus located along the banks of the St. Joseph River where students also have an opportunity to live in our residence halls. These living environments are just one way for students to engage in the campus and surrounding community to extend their learning to the real world. Students may also join faculty in undergraduate research or community-based projects, become part of the honors program, study abroad, work an internship, or play intercollegiate athletics in one of our 12 sports as part of the Chicagoland Conference of the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA). We also provide the best technology and facilities to support learning, research, discovery and creative endeavors.
Welcome to IU South Bend. We are glad you are here and we look forward to playing a role in your educational journey. We are here to help you discover your passions and achieve your dreams. I look forward to seeing you on campus soon!
