The Department of Chemistry at IU South Bend offers four degrees: the Bachelor of Science in Chemistry, the Bachelor of Science in Biochemistry, the Bachelor of Arts in Chemistry, and the Associate of Science in Chemistry. Students who plan to continue in a science related field are encouraged to work toward the Bachelor of Science degree, which requires a minimum of 45 credit hours in chemistry along with 13 hours of mathematics and 10 hours of physics.
To enter one of these programs, students should have completed a minimum of two years of high school algebra, one-half year of trigonometry, and one year each of chemistry and physics. Those who have not completed the suggested high school mathematics are advised to take a semester of precalculus mathematics as soon as possible in preparation for MATH M215 Analytic Geometry and Calculus I.
Students who plan to complete a chemistry or biochemistry degree in four years are advised to take the following courses during their freshman year:
(All courses are 3 cr. hours unless otherwise designated.)
CHEM C105 Principles of Chemistry I
CHEM C106 Principles of Chemistry II
CHEM C125 Experimental Chemistry I (2 cr.)
CHEM C126 Experimental Chemistry II (2 cr.)
MATH M215 Analytic Geometry and Calculus I (5 cr.)
MATH M216 Analytic Geometry and Calculus II (5 cr.)
