Central High School

11) Central High School

330 W. Colfax Ave.

The historic, integrated high school in downtown South Bend was dedicated in 1913 as South Bend High School. Many of South Bend’s African American leaders from the 1930s onward graduated from this high school. It was known as an athletic powerhouse, particularly its basketball team, which was coached by legendary UCLA Coach John Wooden, who guided South Bend Central from 1934 to 1943. The last high school graduating class was in 1970. At that time, it became Central Middle School until 1976. It presently serves as the site for Central High Apartments.
