STUDENT INTERNSHIP OPPORTUNITIES

Student Internship Opportunities at the Civil Rights Heritage Center (CRHC) at IUSB and the Engman Natatorium Museum (South Bend)

The Internship Program serves the Civil Rights Heritage Center’s Engman Natatorium Museum audiences both on- and off-site, through education, exhibition development, public programming, visitor services, Web and social media, marketing, and evaluation.


The Civil Rights Heritage Center, as both a scholarly and public-focused institution is actively involved in developing new ways to make history come alive through innovative outreach programs that will reach the widest possible number of visitors.


Interns work with CRHC staff and volunteers in a variety of capacities and on a range of tasks, including the following activities:

  •   Welcome visitors and present history in a variety of hands-on learning opportunities

  •   Participate in interpretive planning, exhibition development, and prototype testing

  •   Assist in development of school, teacher, and public museum programs

  •   Assist in creating and administering content for the Museum's website, blog, and social media

  •   Help to expand resources for object-based history

  •   Research and prepare oral histories for permanent posting on the website by utilizing the Museum's archives and engaging in interviews with community members to add to the Museum’s archive.

Qualifications:

  •   Field of study is open

  •   A strong interest in American history and culture, education, humanities, museum studies, museum education, art education, music and fine arts, journalism, communications, marketing, business, is strongly encouraged.

  •   Demonstrated interest in museum programs, production, education, public history

  •   Demonstrated interest in marketing, outreach, and communication

  •   Strong writing, research, organizational, interpersonal, and computer skills

  •   Knowledge of desktop publishing software a plus (Dreamweaver, Adobe, Microsoft Office)

  •   Knowledge of social media marketing techniques and programs (example: Hoot Suite)

Civil Rights Heritage Center Mission Statement:

The mission of the Indiana University South Bend Engman Natatorium is to preserve the legacy of the Civil Rights Movement, as well as the history of race and ethnic relations in the Michiana area, and to provide education, research, and forums, while examining human rights principals and challenges for future generations.
