Half the Sky named for the book about empowering women written by NYTimes columnist Nicholas Kristof with his wife, Sheryl WuDunn, has partnered with television documentary company Show of Force to pay to ship the dresses to Nairobi as part of a recycling/reuse/repurposing project that began as a microenterprise business started by Jane Ngoiri. In 1999, Jane joined antipoverty organization Jamii Bora, and ultimately learned to sew, left prostitution and used her savings and a small loan to buy a sewing machine. She began buying secondhand wedding gowns and bridesmaid dresses for about $7 each, and then cutting them up to make two or three smaller dresses. Today, she makes a good though tenuous living and is able to support her children's education improve her standard of living. Read more about this project in Mr. Kristof's NYTimes column from 9/14/11.
