Commision on Dental Competency Assessments Board Exam Information

The Commission on Dental Competency Assessments (CDCA) uses IU South Bend Dental Hygiene Clinic as a site to conduct the patient treatment portion of the CDCA exam. This exam is given sometime in late April or early May. See the NERB's website for specific dates and information.

Indiana University South Bend will host the CDCA Board Examination in May 2017. The specific dates will be posted once determined in late 2016.



The Patient Treatment Clinical Examination portion of CDCA Exam for dental hygiene candidates will take place in the Education and Arts Building on the campus of Indiana University South Bend. The examination will be conducted in the Dental Hygiene Clinic located in room 1205.  Unit assignments will be posted outside of room 1205.  External candidates are welcome to visit the facility prior to the exam; please contact Indiana University South Bend CDCA Coordinator to schedule a date/time. 

Time of the Exam

The following time schedule for the examination is tentative: Candidates must watch the orientation video online on the CDCA website, and attend a clinical orientation in the IUSB Dental Hygiene clinic the day before the first date of the exam:

GROUP A:    7:30 a.m, – 11:30 a.m.   Patient Treatment Clinical Examination

GROUP B:    1:00 p.m. –  5:00 p.m.   Patient Treatment Clinical Examination


Fees and Rental Costs

All candidates participating in the CDCA Clinical Examination are assessed a non-refundable $100.00 facility fee. The fee will cover the expense for utilizing the clinical area and the cost of consumable materials, which includes: patient napkins, disposable gowns, unit barriers, 2X2 and 4X4 gauze, cotton tip applicators, cotton rolls, saliva ejectors, topical anesthetic, desensitizing agent, sterilization bags, surface disinfectant, paper towels, and trash bags.

Clinic Equipment and Usage

Our clinic has A-Dec chairs with an air/water syringe (disposable tri-way tips provided), suction/saliva ejector and HVE (disposables will be provided).  Each unit also has a Dentsply Cavitron SPS unit built into the dental chair bracket tray.  

All candidates are required to bring:

  • Hygiene instruments        
  • 30K ultrasonic insert
  • A/W syringe tip (compatible with the A-dec or Henry Schein three way syringe)
  • Disposable prophy angles (Young prophy cups will be provided)
  • Protective eyewear for themselves and their patients
  • Treatment gloves and
  • Masks


Infection Control

Instrument sterilization services are available in the sterilization area, located adjacent to the dental hygiene clinic. Candidates participating in the CDCA Clinical Exam are required to follow all infection control guidelines as outlined by the Center for Disease Control (CDC) when treating patients at this site. Each unit will be supplied with a bottle of Optim TB disinfectant wipes or Cavicide Wipes. The candidate is responsible to clean and disinfect the unit before and after patient treatment.



We have a university parking lot for candidates and patients adjacent to our building. Patients should be encouraged to arrive at least a ½ hour early for the exam.  All patients should check in at the front desk in the clinic reception area, room 1201.  All patients will be required to sign a HIPAA form.



Outside candidates assigned to IUSB are encouraged to contact and visit the Dental Hygiene Clinic for any specific, up-to-date information and to familiarize themselves with the area and facilities before the examination.
