Application Meetings

All eligible students who intend to student teach must attend an application meeting. Attendance is absolutely mandatory. Typically several application meetings are scheduled during September or October for students wishing to student teach during either the fall or spring semesters of the following academic year. Students attend one of these meetings. The purpose of this meeting is to provide guidance in the preparation of the Student Teaching Application Packet, as well as to reinforce eligibility requirements.

Student Teaching Orientation Student Teaching

Orientation occurs in August for fall student teachers and in December for spring student teachers. Student teachers, classroom teachers and university supervisors attend orientation. Attendance at orientation is absolutely mandatory for student teachers, before their placement can begin. Topics covered at orientation include information on bloodborne pathogens, roles and responsibilities of student teachers, university supervisors and classroom teachers as well as policies and procedures vital to the student teaching experience.

Student Teaching

Student teaching is an eleven (11) week experience for secondary majors. Elementary student teachers complete 2 eight-week placements. Dual licensure students will complete different experiences specific to their licensure combination. This experience is intended to mirror the experiences of the classroom teacher. Student teachers adhere to all policies, engage in all activities, and perform all duties that the classroom teacher performs. Students receive mentoring and support from their classroom teacher as well as an appointed university supervisor. Student teachers begin their experience by observing and are gradually "phased in" to assuming responsibility for planning and instruction until they are responsible for all planning and instruction for a five week period. After this full-time teaching period the student is "phased out" of instructional responsibilities. The student teacher submits their student teaching notebook which provides a basis for grading the experience. Please refer to the Student Teaching Handbook for a more detailed list of notebook requirements.
