Financial Aid and Scholarships
Financial aid and scholarship workshops are held at the Elkhart Center throughout the academic year. In addition, financial aid administrators are available to meet with students at the Ellkhart Center. Several scholarships are available solely for students taking classes at the Elkhart Center or who live in Elkhart County.
You will be notified through IU Notify via e-mail, text, and phone messages when IU South Bend classes are cancelled due to inclement weather or other emergencies. For specific information regarding the status of classes at the Elkhart Center, listen to local radio or television stations for closing announcements or visit the following web sites:
There may be instances when classes are cancelled at one location, but not at the other. If classes are not cancelled, but road conditions make travel in your area dangerous, contact your instructor about individual issues of safety and weather-related absences.
In addition, your instructor may contact you with important class information via e-mail or through Oncourse. Therefore, it is important to check your e-mail account on a regular basis as it is the official means of communication for the university. Also, it is important to make sure your contact information is current at IU-Notify.
No Smoking Policy
Beginning Jan. 1, 2008, IU South Bend became a tobacco-free campus. Indiana University has determined that all campuses will be tobacco-free in order to promote the health and well-being of employees, students, and others on campus. The Elkhart Center adheres to the IU South Bend tobacco-free policy.
An IU South Bend parking permit is required to park in the university parking lot adjacent to the Elkhart Center. Free public parking is available on the street and in the city lot across from the Elkhart Center. You may also park on the second level of the Marion Street parking garage. If you park on the street or in Elkhart city lots, please be aware of any time and usage restrictions.
The Elkhart Center is located two blocks from the Interurban Trolley Transfer Center. By taking the trolley to the Bittersweet stop in Mishawaka, it is possible to connect to a Transpo bus and continue on to the South Bend campus.
An IU South Bend security officer is onsite at the Elkhart Center during open building hours. The security office is located just inside the front entrance. Officers are available to provide first aid and emergency care, safe escort to vehicles and can unlock and jumpstart vehicles. Lost and found items should be reported to the security office. To request the services of an Elkhart Center security officer go to the security office or call 574-520-4239 during the evening.
Students who begin at IU South Bend by taking 24 or more credit hours at the Elkhart Center are identified as SmartStart students. As a SmartStart student you will benefit from the personal attention and instruction from faculty and staff. By taking all of your classes in Elkhart you will have a solid foundation of general education courses to build your IU degree.
If you wish to take all of your classes in Elkhart, you should work with your academic advisor to plan your schedule. Once you have completed 24 or more credit hours at the Elkhart Center you may apply for a Verizon Scholarship.
The Elkhart Center student lounge is located on the south end of the second floor. Quiet study areas are available with nearby snack/soda vending machines and a microwave.
Computers are available for use in the student lounge during open business hours. In addition, 35 computers are in the Elkhart Center Student Technology Center, room 205. Open lab hours vary each semester. Elkhart Center students can also access IU Secure, the Indiana University wireless network.
A coin operated copier is located in the Elkhart Center student lounge.
If you have forgotten your Network ID password, bring a photo ID to the Elkhart Center office and we will assist you in resetting your password.
Information about textbooks for your classes can be found at the IU South Bend Campus Bookstore or by calling 574-520-4309. Textbooks are available in a variety of formats including new, used, rental and E-textbooks.
