Statewide Transfer General Education Core (STGEC)

The Statewide Transfer General Education Core (STGEC) enables a student who satisfactorily completes an approved program of general education in any one of Indiana’s public institutions of higher education to transfer that coursework to any other state educational institution as a block of 30 credit hours towards the general education core requirement.

STGEC at IU South Bend

To fulfill the STGEC at IU South Bend with the intention to transfer to another Indiana state institution of higher education, students are required to complete the following courses from the IUSB General Education Curriculum with a cumulative STGEC  gpa of 2.0 or higher:

Writing

Oral Communication

Quantitative Reasoning

Critical Thinking

Computer Literacy

Literary and Intellectual Traditions or Arts, Aesthetics, and Creativity (T190/T191/T192 or A190)

Human Behavior and Social Institutions B190

The Natural World N190

Non-western cultures

Diversity in U.S. society

Certification of satisfactory completion of the IUSB-articulated STGEC will be noted on the student’s transcript.

STUDENTS WHO TRANSFER IN TO IU SOUTH BEND WITH STGEC CERTIFICATION FROM ANOTHER INDIANA COLLEGE/UNIVERSITY

Students who transfer to IUSB who have completed the 30 credit STGEC at a public Indiana university as certified by the sending institution are subejct to the following rules:

1)  For students who transfer in less than 56 credit hours:

a.  Must complete an additional nine credit hours of general education with coursework in:

visual literacy

information literacy

300-level common core course

2 credits of health and wellness

The above requirements may be satisfied with transfer courses.

b.  Must complete any additional general education courses required by the their school and/or major which may include minimum grade requirements.*

* Note that completion of a transferred writing course in the STGEC must have a grade of C or better in order to satisfy the IUSB Gen Ed Writing requirement.

2)  For students who transfer in more than 56 credit hours:

a.  Must complete a 300-level common core course

b.  Must complete any additional general education courses required by their school and/or major which may include minimum grade requirements.*

* Note that completion of a transferred writing course in the STGEC must have a grade of C or better in order to satisfy the IUSB Gen Ed Writing requirement.
