Admission to the IU South Bend General Studies Degree Program

To be admitted to the IU South Bend General Studies Degree Program, you must first be admitted to Indiana University South Bend. Applications are available through the Admissions Office. Once you are admitted to IU South Bend and have achieved sophomore status, you can apply to the General Studies Degree Program.

If you previously attended another campus of Indiana University, you must electronically file an inter-campus transfer. You will also need to submit a General Studies Admission Application to our office in DW 2227.

Applications for admission to General Studies are available outside the General Studies office; there is no separate fee for admission to General Studies. You must attend a General Studies information session prior to submitting your application for admission. Please call the General Studies office at (574) 520-4260 to reserve a seat.

Admission Standards

If you have previously attended Indiana University or other colleges/universities as a degree-seeking student and if you have earned a cumulative grade point average (CGPA) of 2.0 or higher, you are eligible for admission to the General Studies Degree Program.

If you are a transfer student or a former or current Indiana University student with lower than a 2.0 cumulative GPA, you may be admitted on probation providing you have met the minimum academic standards as set by the General Studies Degree Program.

If you have been dismissed from Indiana University or from another college or university for academic reasons, you may be considered for admission on probation after at least one calendar year from the date of your dismissal.

Current Students

If you have completed 26 credits or more, you are eligible for consideration for admission into the General Studies Degree Program. If we approve your admission on or prior to the campus pass/fail deadline as published in the Schedule of Classes, we will consider any current course work as course work taken after your admission to the General Studies Degree Program. Applications received after the pass/fail deadline will be considered for the following semester.

New Students

Freshmen
If you are admitted to IU South Bend as a freshman with a General Studies major, you will attend New Student Orientation and be advised through the College of Liberal Arts & Sciences.

Sophomores, Juniors, and Seniors
If you are admitted to IU South Bend as a sophomore, junior or senior with a General Studies major, you will be admitted to the School of Continuing Studies. However, your official program admission date is the date we accept you into the General Studies Degree Program; this date may not coincide with the date the IU South Bend Admissions Office processes your application. If we approve your admission on or prior to the pass/fail deadline as published in the Schedule of Classes, we will consider any current course work as course work taken after your admission to the General Studies Degree Program. Applications received after the pass/fail deadline will be considered for the following semester.

Returning IU South Bend Students

If it has been more than one year since you attended IU South Bend, you must complete a Returning Student Form and submit it to the Registrar's Office (AI 128). Come to the General Studies Office (DW 2218) to pick up the form and have it signed by your academic advisor before submitting it to the Registrar's Office.
