Minors

General Studies students are encouraged to include minors and/or certificates as part of their Bachelor of General Studies (B.G.S.) degree. A minor expands student learning and job opportunities, and even chances of getting into a professional or graduate school. That’s because minors allow students to develop a good understanding of an additional academic discipline without having to go through the extra time and expense of a double major. A minor usually requires five to seven courses in a specific academic discipline and requirements vary by department. The sooner you investigate the options and requirements for minors, the easier it will be to build them into your B.G.S. degree.

Minors and certificates are available from several departments across campus. Students must declare their intention with the respective department. Information about minors and certificates can be found in the IU South Bend Bulletin.
