B.G.S. General Education Requirements

Matriculated at IU South Bend fall 2005 or after
Admitted into General Studies Degree Program September 1, 2006 or after
Transferred 55 or fewer credits

General Education Requirements

Requirements designated with an asterisk * must be completed with a grade of C (2.0) or higher to satisfy the requirement for B.G.S. majors. Courses meeting general education requirements may also be used to fulfill distribution requirements.

I. FUNDAMENTAL LITERACIES
Students must complete one course from each of the following eight areas.

Writing I* (Recommend taking with COAS-Q110; linked sections available)
ENG-W 131 Elementary Composition or
ENG-W 140 Honors Elementary Composition

Writing II*
Approved course or course designated as "LAS Second Level Writing" in the Schedule of Classes

Critical Thinking
Approved course or as designated in the Schedule of Classes

Oral Communication*
SPCH-S121 Public Speaking

Visual Literacy
Approved course or as designated in the Schedule of Classes

Quantitative Reasoning*
Approved course or as designated in the Schedule of Classes

Information Literacy
COAS-Q 110 (Recommend taking with ENG-W131, linked sections available)

Computer Literacy*
Approved course or as designated in the Schedule of Classes


II. COMMON CORE
Students must complete one course from each of the following four areas as designated in the Schedule of Classes, at least one of which must be completed at the 300-level. Note that 300-level Common Core courses may have as prerequisite the completion of one or more of the Fundamental Literacies requirements, and in some cases, other prerequisites may also apply.

Students must complete one course from each of the following three areas.

IV. GENERAL STUDIES
Students must complete each of the following courses.

Introduction to General Studies*
GNST-G 203 Must be completed either before admission or within the first 12 credits after admission to the General Studies Degree Program.

Senior Capstone Seminar*
GNST-G 400 Must be completed within the final semester prior to graduation.
