Campus Housing and De-densifying after November 25, 2020

All Campus Housing Offices have been directed to de-densify their buildings starting Wednesday, November 25, 2020 to help reduce the spread of the Coronavirus.  As students travel over the holiday season, interact with visitors and extended family, and stay in-doors longer because of the cold, this all increases the risk of spreading the Covid-19 virus.  IU is taking precautions to keep our community safe.   

Students currently living in campus housing, will need to leave campus and return to their homes or other places they will be staying during this time.  Students can request to stay over the intersession periods and the winter break period, but must have a legitimate and approved reason to stay.  Students can leave belongings in their apartments over break, however, they will have limited access back into the rooms during these times and may not be able to get things in a timely manner that is not an emergency.  We recommend students take all valuables and anything that will be essential or needed over the intersessions and break.

Request to Stay for Intersession and Break Housing Fall 20/Spring 21

Students currently living in River Crossing Campus Housing may request to stay in their apartment after the fall closing deadline of 5:00 pm, November 25, 2020.  Any student approved to stay will be responsible for additional housing fees.   Students may request to stay for any of the following periods: Intersession 1, winter break, and Intersession 2.

Students requesting to stay must submit a request under one of the following conditions.  Documentation or additional information may be required to substantiate requests.

• Academics—Students who have some academic commitment such as taking an accelerated course or having an internship that requires they be in the South Bend area.  Verification of enrollment through the Registrar’s Office will be done by the Housing Office.  Students with internships or other out-of-class academic commitments may be required to provide documentation that shows the student is required to be here while Housing is closed. 
• No Permanent Home—Students who have been through the foster system or otherwise have no permanent home or family to go to during the breaks.  Students will need to provide in writing a description of their situation and any supporting documents. 
• University Commitments—Students who are required to be on campus from a department or office. This would include athletes or students working for offices that deem these positions essential.  Would need to have department or office director make request.  This would include athletes who are required to be here during this time.

Please note that requesting to stay is not an approval.  You will receive notification through your IU email if your request has been approved or denied.
