The Mission of the Department of World Language Studies is to prepare students for citizenship in a multi-cultural, multi-lingual global community. The Department promotes proficiency in languages, knowledge of cultures and literatures, and students' active engagement in cultural and linguistic exchanges. Our faculty members seek to give students a greater understanding of world affairs in an historical context, an enhanced knowledge of the traditions, achievements, and lifestyles of the international community, and an appreciation of differences and similarities among peoples and nations.
To this end, our Department:
takes a personal and involved role in encouraging student success in the program;
maintains an active engagement with the scholarship of their respective disciplines and developments in the field of second language acquisition;
promotes study abroad and foreign exchange opportunities;
supports an up-to-date Language Resource Center;
is committed to maintaining a low student-teacher ratio.
The Department encourages community outreach, and actively supports clubs and other organizations related to world languages and international studies at Indiana University South Bend.
