Postcards from Tomorrow Square: Reports from China

Postcards from Tomorrow Square: Reports from China by James Fallows suggested by Professor Lesley Walker, French

"A collection of essays written for the Atlantic Monthly between 2006-08.  The advantage of the Fallows book is that the essays—postcards—offer snap shots of his impression of China as an outsider, a foreigner.  He specifically thematizes the myriad difficulties inherent in attempting to cross borders: among those difficulties are language, history, and the ethical question of "why."  Indeed, what is at stake in "knowing the other?"  I [am] hoping that we might try to get Fallows to come to campus for a talk."
