Steve Bruce has been named Executive Director of Athletics and Activities and Head Women’s Basketball Coach at Indiana University South Bend. Bruce has served as the head women’s basketball coach at IU South Bend for the past eight years and will continue in that role. The additional responsibilities come as IU South Bend prepares to add men’s and women’s cross country and men’s golf to its varsity teams in fall of 2015. IU South Bend is a member of the Chicagoland Conference of the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA).
“Coach Bruce has built a strong program with the women’s basketball team that serves as a model for athletics at IU South Bend,” said IU South Bend Chancellor Terry L. Allison. “He has the experience, skill and leadership to build the new programs into exceptional teams of scholar-athletes who are successful in their sports and in the classroom.”
The Titan women’s basketball program finished the 2013-14 campaign with a record of 20-11 and achieved a 3.55 cumulative team grade point average (GPA).
Bruce came to IU South Bend from Valparaiso University where he served as an assistant coach from 1999-2003 and associate head coach until 2006. During his tenure, the Crusaders won the Mid-Continent Conference regular season title in 2001-2002, two Mid-Continent Conference Tournament championships, had two NCAA tournament appearances and a NIT quarterfinal appearance.
Bruce played football at Ohio Wesleyan University where he was a team captain his senior year. He graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Physical Education. He went on to earn a Master’s degree from Morehead State University in Kentucky.
