National School Counseling Week
This is National School Counseling Week, sponsored by the American School Counselor Association (ASCA). The purpose of this week is to focus public attention on the unique contribution of professional school counselors within U.S. school systems and how students are different as a result of what professional school counselors do.
As part of its celebration of National School Counseling Week, Indiana University South Bend Counseling & Human Services (CHS) Department faculty and students are engaged in leading and coordinating special events and activities in schools throughout the Michiana area, including South Bend Community School Corporation, Mishawaka, Goshen, LaPorte, Veritas Academy, Penn Harris Madison, Elkhart, Concord, Middlebury and many others.
The special week provides recognition for professional school counselors who implement comprehensive school counseling programs, a vital part of the educational process for all students as they navigate the challenges of the 21St Century.
Professional school counselors are certified, experienced educators with a master’s degree in school counseling. The combination of their training and experience makes them an integral part of the total educational program. Over 50% of professional school counselors in the Michiana area have earned a Masters in School Counseling from IU South Bend’s Counseling & Human Services Department.
In the CHS program we train professional school counselors to be actively engaged in the holistic development of all students and to effectively utilize data to ensure all students have access and opportunity to be successful.
School counseling cannot be done in isolation. Professional school counselors work with teachers, administrators, parents, community stakeholders and students to eliminate barriers to learning and close achievement, opportunity and access gaps.
Comprehensive school counseling programs help to increase student achievement and provide a much-needed resource for students, parents, teachers and administrators. Professional school counselors are integral to student success.
As mental health professionals in the K-12 school setting, professional school counselors are equipped to provide social and emotional support to K-12 students. Professional school counselors support students in their exploration of their mindsets, strengths, abilities, behaviors, attitudes and relationships.
As education advocates, professional school counselors partner with school personnel, families and community stakeholders to ensure that as all students journey through their school years they are afforded as many opportunities as possible to succeed through school and beyond. Professional school counselors are trained to deliver the comprehensive school counseling curriculum which focuses on student mindsets and behaviors preparing them to relate to themselves, their peers, and adults. These student mindsets and behaviors standards taught by professional school counselors also teach students how to navigate the challenges of the 21st century global economy.
As systemic change agents professional school counselors are deeply invested in the academic success of all students and therefore collaborate with all stakeholders to ensure that all students are career and college ready.
More than 32,000 professional school counselors nationwide will be participating in the week’s festivities. Many professional school counselors will be hosting special events and activities to call attention to the myriad benefits of a comprehensive school counseling program.
