A full house at Purcell Pavilion celebrated commencement for graduates of Indiana University South Bend. A record number of bachelor’s degrees (891) were awarded to the second largest graduating class in the history of the campus (1,054).
IU President Michael McRobbie presided over the ceremony and delivered the charge to the class. IU South Bend Chancellor Terry L. Allison spoke about the prominent role of philanthropy in his remarks and also highlighted the achievements of several of the graduates. Student Government Association President Justin Chupp delivered the student address.
For the first time, IU South Bend commissioned an official commencement event hashtag for social media: #IUSB2015, which allowed all participants, attendees, and well-wishers to share and access all social media posts regarding the event. A compilation of all #IUSB2015 social media contributions can be viewed here. This was also the first year IU South Bend live tweeted from the event, including behind the scenes preparation photos and updates.
Frank Schurz, Jr. received an honorary degree and Jerry Thacker was awarded the Distinguished Alumni Award. Schurz is a longtime South Bend business and civic leader who established the Opportunity Scholarship at IU South Bend. Thacker is superintendent of Penn-Harris-Madison School Corporation and holds a master’s degree in Elementary Education from IU South Bend.
