On Wednesday, February 10, the IU South Bend Schurz Library will be hosting a discussion of the book, Operation Homecoming: Iraq, Afghanistan, and the Home Front in the Words of U.S. Troops and Their Families, edited by Andrew Carroll, as part of a veterans book club series. This title provides firsthand accounts of American troops and their families through journal entries, memoirs, letters, short stories, and poetry.
All veterans, family members, and those on campus and in the community who are interested in veterans’ issues are welcome. They will be joined by special guests Mayor Pete Buttigieg and his former Deputy Chief of Staff, Brian Pawlowski, who has just been appointed to the South Bend Office of Community Investment. Both are veterans themselves, and are heading efforts to make South Bend a welcoming and supportive place for veterans and their families.
The Veterans Book Club was made possible by a generous donation from Jerry and Dorene Hammes. Over the next five years, it is hoped that veterans will use the selected readings to share experiences, learn from each other and build camaraderie. The book club also will serve to enlighten those in the campus and broader community about veteran strengths and needs.
Discussion questions and book excerpts are available on the Veterans Book Club Blog: https://vetsbookclub.wordpress.com/. The Veterans Book Club Meeting will take place February 10 in the University Grill Fireside Room, IU South Bend Administration Building from 5:30 to 6:30. Refreshments will be served. Free parking is available.
Contact the Schurz Library at 520-4449 to RSVP or with questions about the event.
