English Proficiency Documentation Options for Admission

If English is not your native language, you must demonstrate proficiency in English prior to admission to meet IUSB's minimum standard for acceptance to both undergraduate and graduate programs. Click here to view the list of countries from which IUSB recognizes English as the native language. Exceptions to the following language proficiency standards may be made on a case-by-case basis.

  • Students who have completed the equivalent of ENG-W 131 are exempt the English proficiency documentation requirement for admission and all further english placement testing.
  • Immigrant students currently residing in the South Bend area and those recommended by the ESL Director may take the IUSB Interim Placement Examination.
  • In addition to meeting the English language proficiency requirement for admission, all first-time international undergraduate students and transfer students must take placement exams in English and Mathematics upon arrival, unless otherwise exempt. Additional details about the placement tests and exemptions can be found on the English Placement Test page.
  • Most non-native English speaking graduate students will also be required to take English placement tests upon arrival, unless otherwise exempt. Additional details about the placement tests and exemptions can be found on the English Placement Test page.
  • Some graduate programs may require a higher level of English proficiency than listed here. Please review the admission requirements for the program to which you will apply.
