Providing the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) with an update of your new address in the US every time you move is required by law (see citation below). Each time you move, within ten (10) days of moving (even within Bloomington!), you are required to update the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) with your new address. To do this, your change of address must be submitted to the international office, who must update your address in SEVIS.

As an F-1 student, this is a fairly easy process. If you change your “Local” address in OneStart, the Office of International Student Services is notified that you have updated or added a “Local” address, and we will then submit your address change to USCIS through SEVIS.

View the video below to watch a demo of how to update your address in OneStart

Immigration regulations require that your US address be updated within 10 days of initial arrival in the US and within 10 days of any change of address.

Setting Your LOCAL Address

To update or add your “Local” address, you will need to:

  1. Log onto Onestart.
  2. Click on the SIS image to open the Student Center.
  3. Scroll down to the “Personal Information” section, and select “Addresses” from the “other personal…” drop-down box.  Click the » button to open your addresses.
  4. In the “Address Type” column, find “Local,” and click the green “Edit” button next to it.
  5. Enter your local address information and choose the appropriate type of housing in the dropdown box in the lower right corner of the screen. Then click the “OK” button.
  6. Click the green “Save” button.
  7. Click “OK.”

You need to be sure to enter a “Local” address, because that is the address to which your immigration documents will be sent.

Setting Your MAILING Address

Upon your initial acceptance to IU South Bend, the Office of International Student Services will mail you your immigration documents to the mailing address on file, so it is important that this address is correct. To provide them with the correct address, you need to update your “Mail” address in OneStart.

To update or add your “Mail” address, you will need to:

  1. Log onto Onestart.
  2. Click on the SIS image to open the Student Center.
  3. Scroll down to the “Personal Information” section, and select “Addresses” from the “other personal…” drop-down box.  Click the » button to open your addresses.
  4. In the “Address Type” column, find “Mail,” and click the green “Edit” button next to it.
  5. Enter your mailing address information, and then click the “OK” button.
  6. Click the green “Save” button.
  7. Click “OK.”

You need to be sure to enter a “Mail” address, because that is the address to which your immigration documents will be sent.
