Physics and Astronomy

Congratulations to Professor Ilan Levine for his contributions to the work of the Solar Neutrino Observatory (SNO) collaboration for which Arthur McDonald, as the SNO spokesperson, was joinly awarded the 2015 Nobel Prize in Physics. Briefly, the award was for the demonstration that neutrinos can change their identities and do, indeed, have mass. Additionaly, this work has also been awarded the 2016 Breakthrough Prize in Physics, and Prof. Levine is a named recipient for this honor. See below for a public lecture Prof. Levine gave on November 19th about the SNO collaboration:

For more information about becoming a Physics major, please contact department chair Jerry Hinnefeld.

The Department of Physics and Astronomy offers B.S. and B.A. degrees in physics, a minor in physics, and a variety of courses for non-majors in physics, astronomy, and geology. Students interested in pursuing an engineering degree can begin their studies at IU South Bend in this department.

Our faculty is made up of talented and dedicated teachers and scholars, who value the close interaction with students and colleagues found at IU South Bend. Physics majors and other interested students have the opportunity to carry out research projects of their own design or participate in the ongoing research of the department's faculty.
