FLAGS (Fostering, Learning, Achievement and Graduation Success)

As part of Indiana University’s Blueprint for Student Attainment  and to compliment our efforts to provide consistent and constant feedback of your academic performance, a new early alert system, FLAGS, has been developed and will be implemented during the fall 2013 semester at IU South Bend.  FLAGS (Fostering, Learning, Achievement and Graduation Success) is used by instructors to provide feedback about your academic performance to you, your academic advisors, and administrative personnel.  FLAGS integrates attendance, early warning and mid-term assessments into a dynamic report that will be updated throughout the semester.  These performance reports will supplement your personal interaction with your instructors, are available through the OneStart Student Center, and can be accessed any time beginning with the 2nd week of classes through the posting of final grades.  Unlike mid-term grade reports that were used in the past, this new student performance report will be updated as needed to communicate your academic performance.

For Students:

Students can access these performance reports by following the path listed below:

OneStart > Services Tab (top of the page) > Student Self-Service (left side of the page) > Go to Student Center > My Academics and Grades > View Grades.

Students are encouraged to maintain open and consistent communications with all of your instructors, and if barriers to your academic performance arise, you should meet with your instructor and academic advisor.

For Faculty:

Faculty may wish to include information about their use for FLAGS in their syllabi.  Attendance will be captured through FLAGS at the end of the 4th and 9th week.  Mid-term assessments will be captured at the end of the 9th week.

The Office of the Registrar will be evaluating FLAGS for the purpose of reporting administrative withdrawal requests and additional information will be forthcoming.  For an interim period, the Office of the Registrar will assist academic units with running FLAGS reports and for communicating the availability of performance data directly to students.

Faculty and administrators who have access IUIE can access FLAGS reports through the Indiana University Information Environment by following the path below:

IUIE > Catalog > Master Catalog > Student > Records > FLAGS > FLAGS Roster Report for Instructors

Specific information about the Faculty Center Student Performance Roster is available at https://usss.iu.edu/sites/sistrainingsupport/SIS%20Online%20Help/SIS%209.0%20Job%20Aids/Student%20Records/Rosters/Student_Performance_Roster.pdf and additional documents and tutorials are available at https://usss.iu.edu/sites/IUEarlyAlertSystem/SitePages/Home.aspx

For Advisors:

Many of the key functions of FLAGS was modeled after IU Retain.  In the past, “push” notifications were sent to advisors as faculty reported risk indicators in IU Retain.  At the present time, these notifications are not available in FLAGS and advisors can obtain FLAGS information through the SIS Administrative Center and/or IUIE.

Advisors and staff who have access IUIE can access FLAGS reports through the Indiana University Information Environment by following the path below:

IUIE > Catalog > Master Catalog > Student > Records > FLAGS > FLAGS Roster Report for Advisors

Additional reports are available in the IUIE FLAGS folder.

Advisors who have been formally assigned to their students through SIS, can view FLAGS information through the Student Information System Administrative Center by following the path listed below:

SIS > Main Menu > Self-Service > Administrative Center > My Advisees (Students who have been identified as at-risk will have a link to FLAGS in their row)

The Office of the Registrar is committed to student success and assistance to faculty and staff.  As questions about FLAGS arise, please direct them to jjohnsto@iusb.edu.
