Are you spending hours reading but can't remember any of it? Do you take notes in class but then struggle to understand them when reviewing for exams? Are you finding that you don't have enough time to get everything done or you put assignments or studying off until the last minute? We can help you fix these problems -- to study smarter, not harder.
What happens in a Study Smarter session?
You will meet one-on-one with a Study Smarter coach in a friendly, comfortable setting. You will work together to determine your strengths and weaknesses as a learner, determine your learning style and design strategies to meet your individual needs. You are encouraged to bring syllabi, assignments, old exams, textbooks and class notes so the coach can help you create an efficient study system.
What about the coaches?
Study Smarter coaches are students who have been trained to become academic coaches. In many cases, they have taken courses you may be struggling with right now. They have experience working with students to find effective strategies for learning course material in the most efficient and effective way. Your coach will explain the mechanics of the skill, and, through your consistent practice, you will find yourself better equipped for academic success. Your coach might suggest:
- Developing written goals
- Keeping weekly "To Do" lists with specific tasks
- Using exercises to improve efficiency in memory, listening, reading, writing or vocabulary
- Role playing to develop confidence in talking with instructors
- Scheduled reminders by phone or email
How long does a session last and how many sessions do I need to attend?
Sessions usually last about one hour. You can reschedule as many times as you and your coach feel is necessary. If you are working on developing a time management plan or a study skills system, you will see better results if you participate in several sessions. The most effective sessions are face-to-face; however, if your work schedule does not allow you to participate during regular hours, we will try to accommodate your needs by email and phone coaching.
How do I make an appointment and where will I meet my coach?
Before you make an appointment, you need to complete and submit the Study Smarter Form. Once you submit this form, you will be contacted by the Study Smarter supervisor to set up a planning meeting. During this meeting, the supervisor will match you with a coach and schedule your first appointment. You will then meet with your coach in the Academic Centers for Excellence (ACE), in the Administration Building, room 122.
What is the cost?
There is no cost for the Study Smarter Program: It's free!
